Jolene’s Credentials: I’ve led writing workshops and presented classes at numerous writing conferences and writing retreats starting in 2012. I read over 100 manuscripts while interning for the Bent Agency (genres from MG fantasy, to YA contemporary to adult speculative to literary fiction). I’ve worked with editors from: Simon&Schuster, Entangled/Macmillan, Albert Whitman, and several other traditional publishing houses. I’ve done freelance work for publishing houses. I’ve been freelance editing for more than five years and in that time have seen clients reach numerous bestseller lists (including USA Today) as well as find agents and publishers for their manuscripts in the traditional publishing world. I was the Author in Residence at Alaska Pacific University before moving to Colorado.

PLOT CHAT or BRAINSTORMING SESSION: $65 – $150/hour

Where is your story trying to go? How can you get it there more effectively? Why aren’t your characters cooperating? How can you fix the giant plot hole in the middle? You’re halfway through your story and it isn’t coming together.

From characterization to conflict to fleshing out a seed of an idea, sometimes a chat with someone who understands character and plot is all you need to gain momentum.

If you want to sort through your ideas, I got you. You’re partway through a MS and don’t know how to move forward, we can work through that as well. Frustrated with the amount of time you’re spending on your online presence? We can chat about that too. The time is yours.

These sessions are my very favorite thing to do. If you want something more in-depth, check out the WORK WITH US page. $65 is no pre-session research and about a 45-minute call, $150 is for the times when you want me to look over a chunk of your book or online presence before we chat, and the call will hover between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes. Price is dependent on amount of pre-session research and length of call.

SIMPLE STORY EDIT: $65 per 10,000 words

A quick read of your MS. You’ll receive an edit letter outlining strengths, weaknesses, plot pitfalls, and a few notes on characterization as well as marketability. Instead of an edit letter, I’m happy to have a 30-60 minute phone/zoom chat with you where we can talk plot and answer questions. Author’s choice. Be aware that this edit does not include in-manuscript notes, but I do make notes AS I read, so you’ll have chronological notes as well as overall thoughts.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT: $70 per 10,000 words

This edit asks the question – does the story work? One editorial pass of your book, plus a round of questions after you receive your edit. This will include in-manuscript notes outlining story and grammar issues as well as an editorial content letter pointing out general overall issues in the manuscript. As always, I am happy to trade out the edit letter for a 30-60 minute phone chat.

Keep in mind that I do very few of these.

KEEP IN MIND:

**Please note a request for a less than 3-week turnaround is considered a “rush” and author will be charged a $50 fee.

EDITING POLICY:

By booking and/or sending over an edit, you’re saying that you understand the following:

Payment is expected at, or soon after, the invoice for the full manuscript is sent. Edits will not proceed past the one-quarter mark without payment.

PRIVACY POLICY:

No portion of your MS, edits on that MS, nor any details/ideas/theories from your MS, nor your personal information will be shared with any outside parties, including social media, unless we have your express permission.

I delete my notes as well as your MS within 30 days of turning your edit back in to you.
